Billy ran off, down the tracks
They took the dogs and they brought him back
Took his belt, and took his shoes
Put his face on the local news
It isn't fair and it isn't right
He didn't swear and he didn't fight
But when the sheriff's got a job to do
He does it right, he sees it through
Now Billy's crying to his God above
Will he do the things he's thinking of
And show the boy just a bit of love
When the sky gets dark
The mood sets in
The voices start
And the demons win
Now Billy was a kind of quiet kid
Didn't do what the others did
Couldn't read, they held him back
Dragged him down, through the cracks
Now I don't know, I wasn't there
Could be Billy gave the girl a scare
Maybe things got out of hand
And didn't go the way he planned
That's how it goes when the feeling starts
It takes ahold then he breaks apart
He reaches out and he makes his mark
When the sky gets dark
The mood sets in
The voices start
And the demons win
A lot of folks, are making plans
To take the law into their hands
Lock him up, lose the key
Or grab a rope and find a tree
But Sheriff Dan is a modern man
He makes a space in the back of the van
Billy's gonna get the help he needs
Billy's gonna be a brand new breed
Now he's crying to his God above
Will he do the things he's thinking of
And show the boy just a little of love
When the sky gets dark
The mood sets in
The voices start
And the demons win
